Avoid These 5 Mistakes when Designing Your Orlando Dream Home

Posted on March 16, 2017

The design and build process takes a lot of planning and preparing for construction on a new home can begin. You have a lot of decisions to make, colors to choose, and materials to explore. Most people don’t think about things they need to avoid because they’re too busy thinking of everything they need to get done. Here are 5 mistakes to avoid when you’re designing your Orlando area dream home.

A Poorly Designed Floor Plan

The floor plan should be creative yet allow proper air flow as well as proper foot traffic. You don’t want to always be bumping into someone as you round the corner while walking from one room to the next. Make sure your floor plan allows proper room for the number of people who live in your home. Load bearing walls can be modified to improve the floor plan if needed.

A Poorly Placed Laundry Room

The laundry room is a big deal in Orlando, especially in households with children or pets. Take your time in designing the perfect laundry room. Take it a step further and create an amazing mudroom instead of just a laundry room. A properly placed and well-designed mudroom adds a lot of functionality to your home. You can store small gardening equipment, children’s outdoor toys, and a variety of outdoor shoes and clothes in the mudroom without having mud or sand throughout the entire home.

A Home Designed for Someone Else

It’s difficult to talk to other people about designing your home without hearing things like, “Oh! If I were you, I would…” You tend to take those ideas to heart and somehow implement them into your design. The next thing you know, your home is designed for your family and friends; not you. Take their ideas into consideration, but when it comes down to it, design your home the way you want it.

Not Enough Storage

One rule of thumb to follow when designing your new home is to double the storage. Go extra large on closet spaces and implement closet organization racks and custom shelving. You will likely live in this home for the next 20 years at least – design it with a lifetime of memories in mind.

Poor Air Flow

We touched on poor air flow in the first tip, but it’s important enough to mention again. Mold grows in moist environments like bathrooms and adjacent closets. Make sure you have proper air flow in those areas and throughout the home to avoid mold. Discuss your HVAC system with the HVAC designer and technician to make sure they’re taking all of those areas into consideration.
